Reflexions poétiques (Poetic Musings)

This book, published by SIC, was printed on 5 May 1917.

​It includes poems by Ary Justman and reproductions of drawings, engravings, and sculptures by his wife, Chana Orloff.

​It is dedicated to Pierre and Germaine Albert-Birot:

“The crowd is still hunched over: I think they are walking on all fours.”

​Apollinaire wrote to them about this booklet of poems: “... thank you for sending me your beautiful poetic musings and reproductions of delightful and very important sculptures...”

SIC

SIC (Sounds, Images, Color, to which Form was subsequently added) was an avant-garde magazine founded by Pierre Albert-Birot in 1916.

​It published works by many artists, poets, and writers, among them Guillaume Apollinaire, Pierre Reverdy, Louis Aragon, and Ary Justman.

​Chana Orloff was also a frequent contributor with her drawings, engravings, or reproductions of her sculptures.

In 1919, Chana Orloff published an album of her wood engravings, in a run of 100 numbered copies. It was published by d'Alignan in Paris.

​It features 11 portraits in which she used the grain of the wood to shade and add nuance to the dark areas.

​Gustave Kahn wrote the following about it in Feuillets d'Art (published in July 1922): “Madame Orloff's drawing is expressive. She brings value to it in her very vivid wood engravings, which do not dally on pointless detail, but elicit the character of the model. They cry out with truth.”

Figures d'aujourd'hui: 41 portraits

At the time of publishing Bois gravés [Wood engravings], Chana Orloff received a commission for forty-one portraits of Parisian celebrities to accompany texts by the critic and poet Gaston Picard.

The book was published in a limited edition of numbered copies in October 1923.

​Chana Orloff's portraits are drawn with graphite.

Drawings

For each of her sculptures, Chana Orloff made up to twenty drawings. She usually seated her model in a comfortable chair and would engage in conversation while she moved from point to point around the studio. This process avoided a fixed or controlled bearing, and allows us to glimpse the true personality of the subject.
